Elvis Presley's rock-and-roll cover of the Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson song popularized by Ernest Tubb in 1949, recorded at Radio Recorders in Hollywood on September 5, 1957 for Elvis' Christmas Album and issued as a single in 1964. The Jordanaires and Millie Kirkham's soprano backing vocals helped make it the definitive version.
Performance tips
- Bring the Elvis croon: low, smoky and a little sly, with the trademark lip curl.
- Lean into the bluesy slides and let the swing carry the tempo.
- Get friends to sing the high oo-oo backing part; it makes the song.
