Country-folk song written by John Prine for his 1973 album Sweet Revenge. Prine said it is about someone stuck somewhere they don't want to be, using prison imagery, and that being a sentimental guy he set it at Christmas.
Performance tips
- Sing it plainly and conversationally; Prine's charm is understatement.
- Let the humor and the longing both land without pushing either.
- A slow, steady tempo works best, so do not rush the imagery.
