Celtic folk-punk Christmas ballad written by Shane MacGowan and Jem Finer and sung as a duet by MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl, released as a single in November 1987 and included on the 1988 album If I Should Fall from Grace with God. It is regularly voted the UK's favourite Christmas song.
Performance tips
- A true duet: one singer takes the bleary, ragged male part, the other the sharp, sassy reply.
- Start slow and tender on the piano intro, then kick into the waltz when the band comes in.
- The argument section is all attitude; play it to each other and the crowd will love it. Note: one lyric is often edited for radio, so check your karaoke version.
