Greg Lake's debut solo single, with lyrics by Peter Sinfield, released in November 1975; it reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Lake said he wrote it in protest at the commercialisation of Christmas, and its instrumental riff borrows from Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite.
Performance tips
- Sing it warm and steady in a clear baritone; it is reflective, not a party anthem.
- Let the orchestral riff breathe between verses rather than rushing in.
- Build gently toward the final verse and finish with a soft, sincere close.
