Screamin' Jay Hawkins' unhinged 1956 Okeh single, later included on his 1958 LP At Home with Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Originally conceived as a ballad, its growls and screams helped invent shock rock and inspired covers by Nina Simone, Bette Midler and Annie Lennox.
Performance tips
- Go big and theatrical: grunts, growls and screams are part of the song, not extras.
- Use a slow, heavy waltz feel and lean on every beat like a sideshow act.
- A cape, a prop skull or a menacing stare at the front row sells it.
