Mel Torme and Bob Wells standard first recorded by the King Cole Trio in 1946. This page is Cole's March 1961 stereo re-recording with Ralph Carmichael's orchestra, made for The Nat King Cole Story and later added to the album The Christmas Song (1962); it is the version generally regarded as definitive and most played on radio, and was added to the National Recording Registry in 2022.
Performance tips
- Sing it like a whisper to one person: velvet tone, easy vibrato, nothing forced.
- Enunciate every word cleanly the way Nat did; the diction is half the charm.
- Keep the room quiet and intimate; this is the slow-dance moment of a Christmas set.
