Ross Bagdasarian's 1958 Liberty novelty, released as David Seville, which used sped-up tape for the witch doctor's chant and topped the Billboard chart; the technique led to Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Performance tips
- Pitch the witch doctor's nonsense chant high and squeaky, like the sped-up record.
- Keep the narrator's verses straight-faced for contrast.
- The chant is the hook, so invite the crowd to shout it back.
