Otis Redding's version of the R&B Christmas standard first recorded in 1947 by Johnny Moore's Three Blazers with Charles Brown on vocals and piano. Backed by Booker T. & the M.G.'s, it was released posthumously in 1968 as the B-side of his White Christmas single and on Atco's Soul Christmas compilation.
Performance tips
- Lean into the slow, bluesy shuffle and let your phrasing sit a little behind the beat.
- Save the Otis-style grit and ad-libs for the repeats instead of belting from the first line.
- Works great late in a holiday set when the room wants something sultry instead of jolly.
