Otis Redding's slow soul reading of Irving Berlin's standard made famous by Bing Crosby, recorded with Booker T. & the M.G.'s. Atco released it posthumously in 1968 as a single backed with Merry Christmas Baby, and it was included on the Soul Christmas compilation.
Performance tips
- Take it slower than the Crosby version and build from a near-whisper.
- Save the raw, pleading Otis intensity for the final lines.
- A strong pick for soul singers who want a familiar song with room to improvise.
