J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie song made a hit by Eddie Cantor on radio in November 1934. Banjoist Harry Reser's orchestra, with Tom Stacks on vocals, made the earliest known recording on October 24, 1934 (Decca 264A), and that version appeared in Variety's charts in December 1934; George Hall's Bluebird version was also a 1934 hit.
Performance tips
- Sing it with bright, old-time dance-band bounce and a wink.
- Keep the phrasing crisp and on the beat like a 1930s band vocalist.
- Play up the naughty-or-nice warning to the crowd; it's an instant singalong.
