Bing Crosby's first commercial recording of the 1818 carol by Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber, made November 13, 1935 for Decca 621 with Adeste Fideles, after an earlier soundtrack recording for the St. Columban Foreign Missionary Society. It charted in December 1935, 1938 and 1941, and Crosby arranged for the profits to go to charity; he re-recorded the carol in 1942 and 1947.
Performance tips
- Sing it softly and reverently; restraint is the whole effect.
- Support long, even phrases with steady breath.
